The Institute for Habits of Mind and the Learning Community at Florida International University invite you to shape the future work of Habits of Mind.
Join Art Costa and Bena Kallick, along with other educators for one day to focus on the latest developments about dispositions and the 16 Habits of Mind. A unique opportunity to learn from the very best of national and international practice, meet like-minded professionals and further work in the field. The focus of this conference is addressing the NOW generation of students. How can we build the Habits that will help them to become more self-directed and to engage in more reflective assessment in their work?

9:15a – 10:00a Keynote: Art Costa and Bena Kallick will share what is new in thinking and applying Habits of Mind around the world
10:00a – 10:15a Break
10:15a – 11:30a Lisa Dieker from University of Central Florida will talk about her research using avatars for Professional Development. She will have people interact live with the avatars and provide time for people to interact around this exciting new concept for practicing and receiving feedback about using the Habits of Mind.
11:30a – 12:15p Idea Café tables will be set up with people from schools that are practicing Habits of Mind and people who are working nationally and internationally as professional developers. Focus will be on lessons learned.
12:15p – 1:00p Lunch
1:00p – 2:00p Terry Thoren from Wondergrove will share what he learned from his research as producer of Rug Rats. We will see one of the animations from the 16 Instructional Habits of Mind Animations and then have a visit from one of the avatars in the animation.

Art and Bena will share the latest research and learning about HOM, specifically focusing on how to assess what really matters–the life long, essential Habits of Mind
Terry Thoren
CEO and Co-Founder of WonderGroveLearn
Terry was the producer of Rugrats and the Simpsons. He is well versed in how to get the attention of kids and has put those incredible talents to developing instructional animations. He will share the power of using animations as a teaching tool and will invite one of the animation characters to join us virtually.
Lisa Dieker
Pegasus Professor and Lockheed Martin Eminent Scholar at University of Central Florida
Lisa’s research has led to some amazing discoveries about how to coach teachers so that they chance instructional behaviors. She will show us this virtual teaching-coaching experience inviting some of our participants to play with their skills at modeling Habits of Mind.
